Cathy McLeod

Cathy McLeod is currently the Conservative Candidate for Kamloops – Thompson – Cariboo. She was first elected to the House of Commons in October 2008 and was re-elected in 2011. She recently served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health, having been appointed in February 2015, and for Western Economic Diversification, appointed in September 2013. Previously, Mrs. McLeod was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Labour in September 2013, and to the Minister of National Revenue in January 2011.

Over the years Cathy has been entrusted with a number of portfolios and was named as one of the top 5 busiest MPs during the summer of 2014 as well as recognized as one of 5 MPs with a perfect voting attendance record. Since coming to office in 2008, Cathy has also worked on the Special Committee on Violence Against Indigenous Women, the Standing Committees on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities, the Status of Women, Finance, Health and is a member of a number of international all-party caucuses.  She has also been a member of the Red Tape Reduction Commission and of the Prime Minister’s Team on Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health.

Cathy has worked with many constituents one-on-one addressing their concerns over the years. She has collaborated through roundtables on issues ranging from justice, to the Canadian economy and international trade, to mental health, and seniors issues, to name a few. Cathy has sat down with many constituents over ‘Coffee and Tea with the MP’ sessions throughout the riding. Every year many constituents have shared their ideas during the government’s pre-Budget consultations, and she was always pleased that suggestions from Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo were included the final Budget. She cites a highlight of her time in office as being the many special events that were held over the years,
whether it was recognizing outstanding citizens during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, commemorating Veterans of the Korean War and Veterans of the Second World War, among others.

She has been proud to work with the people of Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo to strengthen each community in the riding, from investing in important infrastructure development projects; supporting local arts and cultural events; funding environmental projects to protect the natural beauty of our region; strengthening the local economy by investing in businesses, skills training, and supporting research and innovation whether it be through local companies or Thompson Rivers University. Lives have been improved across the riding through social programs aimed at seniors, youth, Aboriginal groups, new Canadians, disabled persons, the homeless, and others over this time, and Cathy has been proud of what she has been able to accomplish working with her constituents and delivering close to $350 million in federal funding to the riding.

Prior to her time as the MP for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo, Cathy worked as a registered nurse and managed a number of health care centers, including Pemberton, Logan Lake, Chase and Kamloops Downtown Health Centre. Cathy served as Mayor of Pemberton in 1996, as a director for the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District, spent three years at the In-shuck-ch treaty table as a Municipal Provincial team delegate, and focused on primary health care reform at Interior Health. Cathy graduated as a registered nurse from the University of Western Ontario in 1981 and completed a Master’s Degree in International Primary Health Care from the University of London in 2007. Cathy has been a resident of British Columbia for the past 30 years, and has lived in Kamloops since 1999. She is married to Gord and has three adult children.
